Recently, we invited eight different architectural firms to present concept designs for the development of the front of the college, which is the most demanding in terms of needing refurbishment. Pacific Environments, who coincidentally are the architects responsible for the new Hard Materials Technology area presently being refurbished, presented the preferred concept and we are seeking community feedback on their proposals. You can view these images in colour and complete a feedback form on our website www.selwyn.school.nz.
Pacific Environments have proposed that the whole development takes place in distinct stages. In terms of recognising the need for funding, this is of course a suitable model to go forward with. The school receives Ministry of Education property funding has some additional money available.

Stage 1
This would see Community Education move from its present position to a two-storied home at the other end of the Soft Materials Technology wing.
The two rooms facing the road would be refurbished to cater for Food Technology, Hospitality and Biotechnology – all academic subjects that are in high demand as a result of the spectacular growth in these industries nationally and internationally.
The current Community Education office would be converted to a small restaurant to enable Hospitality students to complete their National Certificates in Hospitality at Levels 2 & 3. It is also envisaged that Community Education students and community groups using the Selwyn theatre will find this a useful facility.
The current food and meeting rooms on the other side of this wing would be refurbished to accommodate a new Fashion and Fabric Technology Room and also a Design room equipped with computers and other state of the art electronic technology needed for study in Soft Materials Technology industries.
Stage 2
This would see an enlarged Administration area which would push out much further towards the street. It would include offices for all of the school leadership, Heads of House and key administration staff plus new appropriately-sized meeting rooms.
Stage 3
This stage has two major components constructed in the area beside the Selwyn Theatre where the original drama, dance and music rooms are currently located. These old classrooms would be removed and in their place it is proposed that a Whare Wananga is built, along with a new two-storied block to house all of the Performing Arts subjects and Media Studies.
