Just before lockdown, Year 12 students Margaret Tuakoi, Petuana Malupo, Colin Matthews and David Tapa joined over one hundred other students from Auckland schools at the 2020 Year 12 Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow (P.I.L.O.T.) day held at the Unitech Campus. It began on the Unitech Marae with a Powhiri in the stunning whare whakairo, ‘Ngākau Māhaki’.  The vision of the programme is to inspire students to achieve their very best and assist them in exploring and making informed decisions about their educational and career pathways.  Following an inspirational keynote speaker, our students then participated in a number of interactive workshops focused on leadership. It was also lovely for the students to be welcomed by a former Head Student of Selwyn College Afu Aleva who recently graduated from university and is a wonderful role model for our Pasifika students.

Margaret Tuakoi summed up the experience for her:

"I've learned more about leadership and the identity of our culture. PILOT is an amazing Pacifika campus where all Polynesian teenagers congregate in one place and share what we know leadership is and how we show this to our next generation."
