Congratulations to Our Shameen Hayat

Excellence in Teaching Award Winner 2010

On Thursday this week our Head of Social Sciences, Shameen Hayat, was honoured for her outstanding teaching ability at a special function at parliament.

Shameen was one of only four secondary teachers nationally to be the recipient of a regional Excellence in Teaching Award. It was presented to her by the Hon Anne Tolley, Minister of Education, at a special luncheon held in the Grand Hall in Parliament Buildings in Wellington.

The auspicious nature of the award was also reinforced by the fact that our Prime Minister the Hon John Key took time out on Budget Day to attend the luncheon. He actually ended up sitting next to Shameen!

There were twelve teacher-educators who received awards from across the early childhood, primary and secondary sectors. Each award winner was required to speak for 5 minutes on what makes them an excellent teacher. Later this year several of them will be announced the national winners. Shameen made a superb speech about the five key aspects of her pedagogy.  Alix Coleman, HOD Art, and Principal Sheryll Ofner were fortunate to accompany Shameen to Wellington and they both felt so proud that Selwyn College has such an exemplary teacher!
