It was a huge night for Selwyn College at the 2018 Showdown Awards at the Mercury Theatre, especially for everyone associated with our 2018 musical ‘Dusty’ and our Year 13 Drama Production ‘Revenge of the Amazons’. The evening began with a brilliant rendition of Dusty Springfield’s hit ‘Quiet Please - There’s a Lady on the Stage’ by our very own Ruby Wills. This was the first time Selwyn has performed at the awards and Ruby did a magnificent job!
From there, Selwyn staff and students went on to win award after award, including the most prestigious: The iTicket Award for Outstanding Musical. It was a particularly poignant moment for Director Duncan Allan who, year after year, produces musicals of an exceptional professional standard, giving our students the experiences of a lifetime.
Also for the last few years, Duncan has been supported in his triumphs by our talented Director of Co-curricular Music Rachel Larcombe. It was wonderful to witness Rachel receiving the Best Musical Director Award for the third time.
The awards are primarily targeted toward student roles and our students completely soared! Indeed, they won most of the important awards for a Musical, which is testament to their remarkable talent and effort:
Ruby Wills - Best Female in a Leading Role: for her performance as Dusty Springfield
Sam Francks - Best Male in a Leading Role: for his performance as Rodney
Sidney Kennedy - Best Sound Design in a Musical
The Cast of Dusty - Best Choreography Performance
The Cast of Dusty - Best Choral Performance
It was also fantastic to see our Year 13 production ‘Revenge of the Amazons’ honoured for excellence. A huge congratulations to:
Josh Gordon - Best Set Design in a Play
Elma Avdovich, Brenya Beale, Taylor Park, Sawyer Paul - Best Costume Design in a Play
Congratulations to everyone!
