Mathematics

Mathematics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships. Mathematics equips students with effective means for investigating, interpreting, explaining, and making sense of the world in which they live. By studying Mathematics, students develop the ability to think creatively, critically, strategically, and logically. They learn to structure and to organise, to carry out procedures flexibly and accurately, to process and communicate information, and to enjoy intellectual challenge. Mathematics has a broad range of practical applications in everyday life, in other learning areas, and in workplaces.

Junior Mathematics

In Years 9 and 10, students develop the ability to think creatively, critically, strategically, and logically. Students develop important thinking skills and enjoy intellectual challenge. They use a range of resources including texts, Education Perfect, Statistics software, and websites such as nrich which provide a range of stimulating activities. Students learn to pose questions, analyse data, develop strategies to solve problems, and become more independent learners. Students are given opportunities to extend themselves through a number of Mathematics competitions and the inter school Mathex competition.The course helps build a firm foundation for learning and success in NCEA Level 1.  


Senior Mathematics

Level 1 Mathematics

Mathematics and Statistics have a broad range of applications in everyday life, in other learning areas and in many career options. Developing mathematical skills is vital for success in both school and beyond. This course develops students’ thinking skills through a study of Number, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Probability. Entry requirements: Open to all students based on Year 10 results.

Level 2 Mathematics

This course prepares students for both tertiary study and for some career pathways. It builds on the skills that have been developed at Level 1. Through a study of Algebra, Calculus, Statistics and Probability students learn to create models and predict outcomes, to conjecture, to justify and verify, and to seek patterns and generalisations. They learn to process information and communicate results, and understand when results are precise and when they must be interpreted with uncertainty. Entry requirements: 14 credits in L1 Mathematics including the Algebra external assessments.

Level 3 Calculus

This course is designed for students intending to study at University particularly in the fields of Science, Technology and Engineering. It builds on skills that are developed at Level 2 Mathematics. Students study the Algebra of Complex Numbers, Differentiation, Integration, Simultaneous Equations and Conic Sections. Entry requirements: 14 credits in L2 Mathematics including the Algebra and calculus externals.  

Level 3 Statistics

This course is designed for students intending to study at University. It builds on skills that are developed at Level 2 Mathematics. The topics that are covered in this course are Probability methods, Probability distributions, Time Series, Bivariate Data and Statistical Inference. Entry requirements: 14 credits in L2 Mathematics including the Statistics internal assessment and the Probability external.
