Influenza A (H1N1) 'swine flu' resulting from human to human transmission, initially identified in Mexico, have been confirmed in New Zealand and many other countries around the world.

In response the Ministry of Health is implementing the New Zealand Influenza Pandemic Action Plan, as well as following international developments and advice from the World Health Organization.

The WHO has declared an influenza pandemic and has raised the level of alert from phase five to six. Phase six is the highest phase, this means there is global spread of the virus, but it does not mean the disease is severe.

Selwyn College are developing their own action plan in keeping with MOH guidelines.
