Our Expectations in Action
The following:
· Explains what is meant by each of Our Expectations.
· Tells students (in italics) what they need to do if they find themselves either unable to or fail to meet an Expectation.
Treat everyone with respect
This means:
· Accept people who are different than you.
· Listen when others are talking.
· No put downs or mocking!
· No bullying, intimidating or harassing!
· No fighting!
· No swearing!
· No obscene gestures!
· Value the rights of others including the school’s neighbours!
Honour and celebrate diversity and success
This means:
· Listen to the viewpoint of people from your own and different cultures.
· Be positive about people different than yourself.
· Be proud of what you and others have achieved.
· Participate positively in assemblies and other events that celebrate diversity and success.
Ensure a safe, clean and positive environment
This means:
· Keep your own property safe and never interfere with the property of others.
o Mark all your gear with identifying marks that won’t come off and leave valuable items at home.
o Never steal or vandalise others property and don’t tag on buildings, school books, trees or a neighbours’ property.
· Never putting your own or others’ health at risk.
o Always put your own rubbish in the bins provided and recycle cans and plastic bottles in the special bins provided.
o No chewing gum, spitting, smoking or using or being under the influence of drugs, alcohol or other substances at school, on the way to/from school or at school-related events.
o Never have in your possession cigarettes, lighters, illicit drugs, alcohol or other things associated with these activities.
· Keep yourself and others safe.
o Always follow the teacher’s instructions for your own safety and for the safety of others
o Never bring weapons and dangerous substances such as firearms, knives, fireworks, cigarette lighters, poison and anything else that could cause injury to school.
o Report any bullying or fighting to the teacher on duty in the class room or at interval and lunchtime.
Set goals and do our best
This means:
· Set goals for what you want to achieve each year at school including some academic goals and some non academic goals: e.g. in sport, drama or music.
· Prepare carefully for assessments and make time to catch up on missed work.
· Take personal responsibility to develop the skills you need for a lifetime of learning and success.
Ensure our full attendance, on time
This means:
· Arriving on time to every class including Mentor group!
If you arrive after 8.40am: Bring a note from your parent / caregiver to explain why and report to the late desk at the Student Office for a late pass. If you do not have a note from your parent / caregiver go directly to P1.
If you are absent because of an illness or family bereavement: Bring a note from your parent / caregiver to explain why and hand it at the Student Office give on your first day back.
If you need to be absent for one or more days because of special circumstances: Bring a letter from a parent / caregiver to the Head of House and apply for an exemption from school.
If you need to leave school earlier than 3.10pm for a medical, dental or other appointment: Bring an appointment card or letter from your parent / caregiver to explain why, and show it to your teacher who will release you from class. Sign out at the student office and pick up a leave pass.
Year 13 students may leave the grounds during their free periods, break 1 and break 2.
Listen attentively and get involved
This means:
· Listen to the teacher’s instructions in each and every class you attend.
· Listen to others when they are talking.
· Contribute your answers and ideas to class discussion and ask questions when you are unsure of what to do
· Take opportunity to join in on some of the many activities available at Selwyn: sports, drama and music, academic and social challenges.
Consult the sports coordinator, Head of House (HOH) and daily notices to see what interests you.
Wear the correct uniform with pride
This means:
· Wearing the correct items as detailed in the Uniform Guidelines agreed at enrolment and listed in the Student Diary when travelling to and from school, at school and on official out-of-school activities.
If you arrive at school in incorrect uniform: Report to the student office before 8.40am to explain the reason for the incorrect item. Your name will be taken and you will be sent to the HOH who will give you an alternative item for the day. The HOH will issue you with a uniform pass which specifies the time frame that the incorrect item needs to be replaced. . You must carry that with you at all times.
If you are found wearing an incorrect item in a classroom or the grounds: The teacher will ask you to remove the item and it will be stored in the Student Office until the end of the week. Should you be defiant and uncooperative, you will be taken to a Dean. In such circumstances, the item will be confiscated until the end of the term and a lunchtime school detention will be issued. A letter will be sent home to your parent / caregiver informing them of the situation.
If you wear an item that cannot be removed: You will be immediately sent to your HOH who will supply work and supervise you until the problem is remedied. Your parents will be informed of the situation by phone and if appropriate you will be sent home to change.
If you require a Permanent Uniform Permit to wear a non-uniform item: Give your HOH the appropriate information – a letter from your parents and accompanying medical certificates or cultural evidence, and the HOH will consult with the Deputy Principal.
Your electronic gear should be off and out of sight in class
This means:
· Leave your cell phone, ipod and other electronic gear at home
· If you must bring it to school to communicate with your parents or friends at the start or end of the day then the college cannot take responsibility for any loss, theft or damage to this equipment.
· If you have the equipment at school it must be switched off and out of sight during class time.
If you are found with a cell phone or any other electronic gear in class it will be removed by the teacher and taken to the student office. You can pick it up at the end of the day. If your equipment is confiscated a second time, then the only person who can collect it is your parent/guardian.
Never forget our equipment and homework.
This means:
· Come prepared for every class with pens and all the workbooks, textbooks and gear you need in class.
· Record all your homework in your homework diary and complete your homework on time.
We are the Selwyn team
This means:
· See yourself as part of the Selwyn team whether it is in the school production, on the sports field or in the classroom.
· Behave like a team member and work with others to make the classroom a place where everyone can learn.
Aim to excel
This means:
· Doing your best in the classroom: be organised and have the right attitude to help yourself achieve.
· Doing your best outside the classroom: give it all on the sports field, on the stage and in the concert band and everywhere you represent the school.
· Seek to improve your understanding and skills every day you are at College.
You and I – we can do it!
This means:
· Believe that together we can make Selwyn College a great place where everyone can learn and reach their potential.
