Selwyn’s Stephanie White is a National Winner
Congratulations to our Year 13 student, Stephanie White, who has won the annual essay competition run by the Association of Former Members of Parliament. The topic for the essay competition was how to keep young people interested, informed and involved in our democracy. Stephanie’s essay was initially selected as the winner in the Tamaki electorate and hence, it was forwarded on to the national competition. Stephanie’s success meant that she won a trip to parliament for the day this week. Here is her account of the experience:
“My visit to the legendary Beehive was a great parliamentary buzz. I arrived in Wellington, as nervous as a newly-voted Electorate Rep, to be greeted by the Current & Former President of the Former MPs Association. Contrary to my intimidated belief, these men were human (just exceptional human beings who had worked for several decades to govern and improve New Zealand). It didn’t take long for me to relax and just make the most of this day, as our hosts Mr Catchpole & Mr Kelly quickly put me at ease.
We pulled up in underground parking for MPs only, and followed two tour guides into the magnificent Beehive to meet the Right Honourable Lockwood Smith (Mr Speaker). We sat in his meeting room and discussed everything from Year 13 Classics to Captain Robert Scott’s last diary entry. My earlier stress forgotten, we then went on a spectacular whirlwind tour of the three architectural wonders which Government calls home (Parliament House, Parliamen-tary Library & Bowen House). Despite two fires at parliament in the last century, the classical Greek architecture, 18 carat gold paint, marble walls and stunning stained glass windows have been restored down to each gold leaf.
We had lunch in the Members’ own private cafe, and then at the seven-minute bell, made our way to the Debating Chamber. I was chuffed to learn that three VIP seats in the gallery overlooking the Chamber had been reserved for us. One of the main highlights of my trip was the Debate. It was fascinating to listen to Labour and National hotly debate government’s ideals vs. reality. There was a definite technique to each rebuttal, and let me tell you there is plenty of room for passion and humanity in politics. It is also hearten-ing to know that our democracy cares what I think.
My trip was absolutely fantastic and it was really something to shake hands with so many politicians as an equal.”
