The Selwyn College Science Club organises and participates in many activities throughout the school year. Following is an incomplete list of what we hope to achieve in 2010. Also, see below for a forum where you can suggest your ideas for Science Club Activities and Events. For even more events in which the club may participate, see
here. As well as that, see the Discussion! page
here. Finally, help contribute to activities and events on the sub pages accessible on the left.
- The creation of a small planetarium for use in the Science Department Astronomy classes and the Science Club Astrology Classes.
- The acquisition of a giant Cluedo set for use in Science Club events and meetings to help further students' understanding of forensic sciences.
- A trip to the Auckland War Memorial Museum to study the natural history of New Zealand.
- Visits from notable speakers.
- A possible trip to search for Yeti.
- An high placing in the Brain Bee Competition. Find out more here.
- An high placing in the 2009 BIG Science film competition. Find out more here.
Events undertaken by the Selwyn College Science Club in the past include:
- The Brain Bee competition. Our members pulled off an outstanding effort, studying the 60 page booklet documenting the human brain thoroughly and generally having a great day at the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. The room of preserved organs was definitely the highlight of our tour around the buildings that make up the Faculty!
- "Darwin Guiding". Quite a number of Selwyn College Science Club members were involved in this event which was run in partnership with the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Students spent many hours learning about the life of Charles Darwin in the exhibit that was being shown at the Museum at the time. They learned about his theory of Natural Selection, about his legacy today and also about how a Museum exhibit is put together. After completing a number of sessions, the students became "Darwin Guides" and had the opportunity to show other students of their year level around the Darwin exhibit, acting as tour guides. The "Darwin Guide" programme was a great success.
- "How high can you drop an apple?'. In this Science Club experiment, members sought to find out what the highest height one can drop an apple from without it smashing is. This trial turned into a very fun activity and we also found out the answer to a question we had not asked: If you poke lots of holes in an apple and then drop it from a second story Science block window, it will explode before hitting the ground.
- A trip to see the new Star Trek film (the eleventh Star Trek film) at the cinemas in Newmarket. This trip was a roaring success, with eleven Selwyn College students securing their places as Science Club members. All attendees gained valuable insight into aspects of astrophysics, quantum theory, time travel theories, black holes, red matter and astronomy in general as well as having a fantastic time.
- A trip to see Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. This trip was two pronged, half the club going to the cinemas at Newmarket and the other half going to the Sylvia Park cinemas. 10 students secured their places as Science Club members, all of them learning about physics, astronomy, mechanics and experimental weaponry. An ex-Science Club member attended the Newmarket branch of the trip but promptly left before the group went to lunch at the Rialto Cinemas food court.
- An highly successful trip to the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. Attendees were told about the courses on offer at the Faculty, the entry requirements and about some of the research going on at the Faculty. They were also given the opportunity to look through the Auckland Medical Research Fund Medical Sciences Learning Centre.
